The Hong Kong Vase by Norman Trapman for POLSPOTTEN is a white sculptural vase: a cluster of glossy vessels fused on one oval plinth, 26 cm tall.
The Hong Kong Vase by Norman Trapman for POLSPOTTEN is a white sculptural vase built from a cluster of everyday vessels — a tall cylinder, a slim tube, a handled mug, a trumpet-necked baluster and a pair of small cups — fused together on a single oval plinth. The result is a still life you don't have to arrange: playful, slightly surreal and quietly elegant, exactly the mood Norman Trapman is known for. The Hong Kong vase has also co-starred in a short film with award-winning actress Tilda Swinton.
Everything is finished in one uninterrupted, high-gloss white glaze, so the piece reads as a single object rather than a collection. Light does the styling for you: it pools on the rounded belly of the central vase, slides down the tapered plinth and leaves soft grey shadows in the gaps between shapes, giving the white a faint celadon coolness. Use it empty as a sculpture on a console or sideboard, or fill the openings with single stems, dried grasses or branches at different heights. It sits comfortably in minimalist, contemporary and gallery-like interiors, and adds wit to a dining table, entrance hall or a shelf of monochrome ceramics.
